Loomis Havemeyer was born in Rye, New York, on June 7, 1886, to Charles W. Havemeyer and Julia Ida Loomis Havemeyer. He attended the Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, and in 1907 entered Sheffield Scientific School. After receiving a Ph.B. in philosophy (1910S), Havemeyer studied anthropology under Albert Galloway Keller at Yale University and received his M.A. in 1912 and his Ph.D. in 1915.
