Loomis Havemeyer family papers, 1874-1937.

Primarily incoming correspondence to Loomis Havemeyer, a professor at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. The bulk of the letters are from his mother, Julia I. Havemeyer, and his sister Julia. One group of letters to Loomis were written from Europe where his mother was traveling. Mrs. Julia Havemeyer died 2 August 1921, and as a result Loomis received a large number of letters of sympathy. In addition to the correspondence are papers related to Frances B. Havemeyer, Julia I. Havemeyer, and William F. Havemeyer, Loomis' application to the Society of Colonial Wars, a scrapbook of poetry and pithy sayings he collected, the papers of Joel Loomis, and some Loomis family legal documents.

Loomis Havemeyer was born in Rye, New York, on June 7, 1886, to Charles W. Havemeyer and Julia Ida Loomis Havemeyer. He attended the Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, and in 1907 entered Sheffield Scientific School. After receiving a Ph.B. in philosophy (1910S), Havemeyer studied anthropology under Albert Galloway Keller at Yale University and received his M.A. in 1912 and his Ph.D. in 1915.
